“Why is it always me?” Seneca muttered, rubbing his scratchy eyes as the IV dripped fluids into his veins. He felt a little like one of the characters from his favorite series, Neville Longbottom. No matter what he tried or how he thought this time would be different, every time he stepped off the bus to a tournament, disaster would follow him.

He felt like a weight was sitting on his chest as he turned his head on the starchy pillow in the NSL infirmary. He’d so badly wanted to place well here. He could’ve gotten new pillows and maybe a small TV for his room. He sighed. It was just another pipe dream. With this sickness, he’d probably be out for another month. Shifter illnesses tended to linger.

He wouldn’t go hungry. Flavius would never allow that. But his little luxury comforts would fade. No more chocolates from the grocer. No more candles for his meditation time. No more of that sweet-smelling soap he loved from Bath and Body Works.

“Motherfucker, I hate my life.”

“Don’t do that,” an unfamiliar voice said from the doorway. “It’s a wonderful life to have.”

He looked up to see the most gorgeous man in the Ludus standing in the doorway. Malcom had beautiful blue eyes and golden-blond hair on top of a muscular package that made every fan in the world swoon. Seneca had had a crush on the male since they were both kits.

“Easy for you to say. You’re not the one hooked up to beeping whatnots and feeling like shit,” he said, forcing himself higher up on the pillows. “You shouldn’t be here. I know they said I’m not still contagious, but you don’t want to risk your season.” It was then he got a glimpse of what Malcolm had clutched in his fist. His heart skipped a beat. “For me?” The bouquet of red and orange roses peppered with baby’s breath was perfect.

Malcolm shifted, a smile flirting with his lips. “Yeah. I got them from the gift shop. You have no idea how much talking I had to do to get them to put it on Master Flavius’s tab. I’ll have him take it out of my winnings.”

Seneca smiled. His day was looking up. “Thank you. You really didn’t have to.”

“I know,” Malcolm said, walking further into the room with the flowers extended. “But we don’t get a lot of visitors when we’re sick, and that’s just fucking sad. Plus, yah know”—he shifted again—“I wanted to.”

“Thanks, Mal. I really appreciate you doing this.”

And he did. This was the warmest he’d been in so long. The whole “sleeping with your fellow gladiators” thing was par for the course in most Luduses but not in theirs. They grew up together, and most of them considered it sort of odd to poach in-house. They usually saved their hookups for gladiatorial matches when they were all housed together from all schools. It made for long stretches between sexual encounters, but it was worth it. No one had to do the walk of shame that way, friendships were preserved, alliances stabilized, etc.
